Durban SAPS unveils upgraded victim-friendly facility

The new facility is an important space for victims of crime.

DURBAN Central SAPS recently opened its upgraded Victim Friendly Facility on Friday, and it promises a place of safety and comfort for all that require it when reporting a gender-based, sexual or child-based crime in Durban.

The new facility was sponsored by Boxer which, together with KZN based NPO Crossroads, furnished and equipped the important space for victims of crimes that need a calming place to better report and go over the crime that they had experienced.

“The facility is a safe space for victims. It is a challenge for someone who has suffered sexual assault of any form to report a crime, but we are here to try add extra compassion to the process so that justice may arrive swiftly for those who break the law and hurt the women and children of our communities,” said Durban SAPS communications officer Sgt Zanele Khomo.

The new, upgraded facility offers couches, soft cushions, a brand new TV with DVDs for children to watch, toys and a host of other items to ensure that those who visit the space are offered comfort throughout the process.

“This is a place of sanctuary,” added Khomo.

This is the second of several Victim Friendly Facilities (Pinetown SAPS was the first) that Boxer has planned for SAPS stations across KwaZulu-Natal.

“Boxer has a long and happy relationship with the SAPS and we are proud to offer our hand in support of their fight to curb gender-based violence. We applaud Durban SAPS and the many women and men who spend every day in the selfless pursuit of our safety and bringing criminals to justice. This facility will certainly help women and children in need as they report crimes and seek out assistance from the SAPS,” said Boxer’s marketing director, Andrew Mills.
