Powerlifter raises funds for children

Powerlifting for charity - what a way to give back!

LOCAL powerlifter, Chris Dranias, attempted to break a 30-year-old South African powerlifting deadlift record at the weekend, while raising funds for the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre (DCYCC).

The event was well attended by friends, family and the community who went along to support Chris in his venture, as well as the Centre.
Unfortunately, Chris did not break the powerlifting record, but he did manage to raise a lot of money for the organisation.

A total of R41 150 was raised at the time of the cheque handover, and a further R1140 was donated towards the initiative later on, bringing the total to R42 290.

Other donations that were secured by Chris were non-perishable food items, Future Life cereal and energy bars and chicken products from Classic Food Brands.

“Words are not enough to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Chris for the incredible kindness and compassion he has shown to us at this time. Powerlifting for charity – what a way to give back!” said director, Mandy Goble.

She said Covid-19 and the national lockdown presented unprecedented challenges to the country, economy and world of work and business has not been as normal for anyone.

“This is why we are so thankful for local heroes like Chris who have stepped up to make a difference. We often think that big corporates or institutes have the capacity to bring about significant change. Chris is an example of how an individual who is determined to do good, can do great things!” she said.

Despite the closure of the organisation’s Siyakhula Rehabilitation Centre this year, the organisation still has a huge operational shortfall of R4.9 million which it had to fundraise for.

“We are forever grateful to our community of friends and family that have helped us at a time when it was most difficult to do so. We have a total of R1.5 million still to raise to continue providing care and support to vulnerable children. Chris has literally raised the bar for individuals, proving that everyone can make a difference!” she said.
