‘No security at vandalised water reservoir’ – DA

During an oversight inspection at the reservoir, the DA found there was no onsite security guard on the premises and the fence surrounding it was old.

AN oversight inspection at the Montille Reservoir, by Democratic Alliance councillors, revealed there was no onsite security guard on the premises and the fence surrounding it was old.

The inspection comes after the water reservoir was recently vandalised by unknown perpetrators resulting in long periods of water outages in Durban central and surrounding areas.

“This incident has exposed the municipality’s failure to safeguard critical infrastructure. For criminals to be able to get in and out of a reservoir speaks volumes about the lack of security at the reservoir and the safety of the water that residents consume. This is very concerning,” said Mzamo Billy, DA eThekwini Councillor on Human Settlement and Infrastructure Unit.

Billy said they have written to the chairperson of the Human Settlement and Infrastructure Committee, Thanduxolo Sabelo, requesting that the issue of security at water reservoirs be placed on the agenda to be discussed by the committee for consideration by the council.

“Reservoirs should be considered national key points and safeguarded 24/7. Failure by the municipality to protect, decisively investigate and take action against these criminals will only make matters worse,” said Billy.

“Residents of eThekwini deserve to have an adequate and uninterrupted water supply and we will continue to advocate for this.”
