Standard of league this season has been low – SA legend

South African football legend, Lefa Tsutsulupa said the competition currently is not up to a high standard that we expected.

THElack of a proper season has contributed to the low quality of this season’s Premier Soccer League.

This was the view of South African football legend, Lefa Tsutsulupa.

“The competition currently is not up to a high standard that we expected. The simple reason is they never had a proper preseason. Squads that were arranged were just (based) on who is available now and there was not a proper training process,” he said.

“Most of the teams are still trying to gel, work on tactics. Some of them have new coaches and new players so we are still going to see a couple of teams struggling. Maybe after the seventh game they will start getting their act together and we will be able to analyse thoroughly where we are going.”

Due to the delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, last season had to be finished in a short space of time.

The 2019/20 league finished on the 9th of September and the 2020/21 league started on the 17th of October.

This was a start difference compared to the usual 3-month break in between seasons.

“The year 2020 surprised everyone and it is high time that players also need to reinvent themselves in terms of adapting to the situation,” said Tsutsulupa.

Tsutsulupa along with seven other footballing legends are on a media tour for the MTN 8 Champions League Final which will be played between Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic on 12 December.

Joseph Makhanya, a Pirates legend, rated his former team’s chances very well after they dispatched of their arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs 5-0 over two legs in the semi-finals.

“It all boils down to physical and mental preparation. They (Pirates) have a strong squad with good depth so it looks like there will be a bit of change and even a trophy to end the 6-year (trophyless) drought,” said Makhanya.

The venue for the final is yet to be announced.
