Man arrested after trying to stab Umbilo police officer

Police were conducting stop and search operations at a known robbery hot spot at the intersection of Cleaver and King Dinizulu Roads when they noticed a man carrying a knife.

A MAN who was shot following an attempted attack on an Umbilo policeman on 19 October, has been taken to hospital for treatment.

According to Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS, police were conducting stop and search operations at a known robbery hot spot at the intersection of Cleaver and King Dinizulu Roads in Bulwer, at around 4.30pm on Monday, when they noticed a man walking on the pathway next to Cleaver Road with a knife in his hand.

“Upon seeing the police vehicle the suspect ran away from the members. One officer gave chase and the other two drove around and cornered the suspect. The suspect ran back in the direction of the first member, with the knife still in his hand. The member drew his service pistol and fired a warning shot into the ground. The suspect got closer and attempted to stab the member and the member fired a second shot which hit the suspect on the right leg below the knee,” she said.

The suspect dropped the knife and was arrested, with charges of attempted murder and possession of a dangerous weapon. The man, who was in a stable condition, was taken to King Edward Hospital for treatment.
