69-year-old Berea carjacking victim praises police officers

The woman was offloading furniture from her vehicle when armed suspects approached her and demanded her car keys.

A 69-year-old Berea woman has thanked police for their help after she was a victim of a carjacking. 

On 18 September 2020, the woman was offloading furniture from her vehicle when armed suspects allegedly approached her and demanded her car keys.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the suspects took the vehicle and drove away.

“The matter was reported to the police and a case of carjacking was opened at the Berea police station for investigation,”  said Mbele. 

Two suspects were arrested and they had appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 21 September.

The victim wrote a letter to a local newspaper commending the police officers’ “high level of professionalism”. 

Major General Thulani Gonya, Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, commended police officials from the Berea police station and the police pound for treating the victim with courtesy and respect.

“We welcome such positive responses from all those who encounter good service from members of the SAPS. This is the kind of service all citizens should expect when they visit our police stations,” he said.

According to the latest crime stats, carjacking in Berea increased by 46 per cent from last year.
