VIDEO: No further action on Morningside water leak

The leak was 'fixed' in August, however this lasted only one day.

SIX months later, and an underground water pipe in Milner Road continues to leak.

The leak was reported in Berea Mail in July, after ward councillor Ernest Smith visited the site to speak to residents, who said the underground leak had first been reported to the municipality in March before lockdown was implemented.

The water was pooling and then running, like a river, across the road and down the drain.

Residents said they had received no feedback despite numerous reports for five months, and Smith then escalated it to the municipal department.

In response to this, on 16 August two workers arrived to fix the leak, which according to resident, Beate Kleim, was done in a short time and she was concerned it would only be a ‘band aid’ as this seemed to be quite a bad leak.

Kleim was right, and the leak started again the next day, much to her dismay.

Commenting on this, Kleim said: “At the time I contacted the municipality to inform them that the water was leaking again, and I received a response to say it would once again be attended to, however to date, no one has been on site and nothing has been done. This is very frustrating, and water is still being wasted,” she said.

Councillor Smith visited the site on Friday, and reported that although the leak wasn’t as bad as it had been previously, the water was still leaking in the same place, and running down the drain.

“I will once again report this matter and hope for some resolution,” he said.

Responding to a request for comment on this matter, eThekwini Municipality’s Spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela, said: “We are not aware of the incident but now that it has been brought to our attention, the City will move with speed to address these issues.”

He urged residents to please report any water issues to the contact Call Centre number: 080 131 3013 or EWS WhatsApp number: 073 148 3477.
