Glenwood couple celebrate diamond anniversary

Trevor and Pam Haslam said love, teamwork, consideration and communication had been the secret to their long, happy marriage.

GLENWOOD love birds Trevor and Pam Haslam celebrate 60 happy years of marriage today, 3 September.

The couple met in amateur dramatics at the YMCA in 1954, when Pam was in Standard 9 at school and Trevor was a first year apprentice.

“I fancied Trevor, he made everyone laugh and was always up to antics, which was good,” said Pam. Trevor was Pam’s partner at the Durban Girls’ High School dance, and they were engaged in 1958 and married at St Thomas Church on 3 September 1960.

“We were saving to tour Europe but got talked into buying a house in Yellowwood Park. We were one of the early residents, as there were only about 48 houses then,” said Pam.

Trevor worked for SAPREF and retired from the company 30 years later.

“Those were good years and there was a lot of community spirit. Trevor became a police reservist and his life was busy. He also loved his rugby and used to play for Tech Old Boys,” said Pam. Trevor has enjoyed helping his family over the years, and his garage has always been his sanctuary.

Pam gave up her job when her first daughter, Paige, was born.

The couple also have a younger daughter, Julie. Pam was a stay at home mom for about 10 years until she was recruited by Yellowwood Primary School to replace a staff member for 10 days, which turned into 20 years’ employment with the Education Department.

She is also a passionate seamstress, and enjoys beadwork. Pam has been involved with various groups in Yellowwood Park, was on the board of the school, taught Sunday school for many years, ran the Girl Guides in Yellowwood Park and was district commissioner for the area. She, along with her sister Dawn, started a Women’s Institute.

The couple has been great caravaners and said they love the Drakensberg.

They were also keen walkers and spent time together doing things they enjoyed.

They have lived in their flat in Cato Road, Glenwood for the past 20 years.

Speaking about her husband, Pam said: “Trevor has been an absolute love. He has been tolerant and always been interested in everything I or the girls have done. We have worked together all our lives. He has always been an amazing dad and never had to correct the girls.”

Trevor said Pam has always been loving and he admired her as someone who has always helped others and kept in contact with friends.

“We are fortunate to have two amazing daughters, two great sons-in-law and two lovely grandchildren, all of whom have spoilt us rotten during the lockdown. They are going to treat us to high tea at the Oyster Box Hotel on Saturday for our anniversary. We spent the first night of our honeymoon at the Oyster Box, 60 years ago!” said Pam.

The couple said the ‘secret’ to their long and happy marriage has been love, and they had made it through lots of ups and downs over the past 60 years.

“You will do anything for someone you adore. It’s been give and take, considering each other, communication and teamwork,” they said.
