Strong women recognised by Umbilo CPF

The community was asked to nominate strong women, who either reside or work in the area.

IN recognition of Women’s Day, Umbilo Community Police Forum (CPF) wanted to identify strong women in the Umbilo, Bulwer, Glenwood and Glenmore areas who are making a difference in their communities.

Sean Ellis, deputy chairperson of the Umbilo CPF, said they then called on the community to nominate these strong women, who either reside or work in the area.

“We asked that residents nominate women they believe are making a difference in a positive way. We closed the nominations on the morning of Women’s Day,” he said.

Based on the nominations received, six women were identified by the community.

Karen Cotton from Glenwood Community Watch (GCW) has been a key link in GCW for over 12 years.

“Karen plays a central role in its operations, as what we call Admin, which is an understatement of note. Karen receives all information on crime in the GCW sector and passes it onto the patrol members for attention or information as the need be. She also communicates with the relevant security companies as well as SAPS, Metro Police, the CPF and the local community at large, all done on a daily basis 24/7,” said Guy Perrins in his nomination, adding that the GCW would not be able to function at all without Karen’s continued and ardent support for the community at large.

Ward councillor Mmabatho Tembe and Nosphiwe Faith Jali nominated Khanyisile Sibiya and NtombiZethu Jali, who run the Senzokuhle Community Based Organisation based in Kenneth Gardens.

The women support the local community with health, handwork and crafts.

“They have opened a clinic and play a huge role in the community and have helped a lot of families and elderly people. They are selfless, humble, loving and most of all very dedicated to the community,” the nomination stated.

Principal of Durban Primary School, Shaylene Miller was recognised as a great leader in the community by Nirvana Chellan and Jennifer Gray.

The women said hat she sets a fine example of leadership and puts her heart into each child and every teacher at her school.

“She donates generously to animal shelters and personally helps people in need in any way possible. Her genuine character and ability to make a difference everywhere she goes is truly admirable and extremely inspiring,” said the nomination.

Heather Rorick Roos, Bulwer Safety and Urban Regeneration Forum (BSURF) and Umbilo CPF chair was recognised for the fact that she works endlessly for the people (women included) of Glenwood.

Nominations were made by residents Louise Stehouwer, Gail Richards, Gloria Abrahams and Hazel Spires, who said for years Heather has put her time, heart and passion into trying to make Glenwood a better place to live in.

Her nomination stated: “She really goes way and beyond for this community. Day and night she is available to assist the members of or community. She is an exceptional woman and such an asset to the community. Heather goes the extra mile with any tasks thrown at her. She is such a hands-on person and is so informative of anything that is going on in the area. Ask Heather anything and she will make a plan to give you a prompt answer. She is amazing.”

The sixth nomination was Councillor Mmabatho Tembe.

Susanna Gand and Gail Richards, who nominated her, noted the exceptional work she does throughout the year and for which she does not receive enough praise

“She is such an amazing, helpful and faithful woman, who always goes the extra mile for our community,” it stated.
