eThekwini Municipality introduces 90-day debt relief to customers

The eThekwini Municipality has announced the introduction of a new initiative that will assist residents and businesses to pay off their debt.

THE eThekwini Municipality has introduced a 90-day debt relief programme for customers in debt.

The Covid-19 Debt Relief Programme will benefit customers who have accumulated debt which is 90 days and over and are struggling to pay their bills.

The programme is open and available to businesses and residents with debt 90 days and over.

“Residential areas must approach the city to make a payment agreement and settle between 10 per cent to 25 per cent of their capital debt as a down payment while business customers are legible to pay between 25 and 50 per cent of (their) capital debt as a down payment,” according to a statement from the city.

“The rest of the debt will be payable over the period of the agreement with no interest payable. The interest must include current charges on the bill.”

The city said the total interest accumulated and raised to the customer account will be written off.

Since the start of the national lockdown, eThekwini Municipality has announced record level drops in rates collection.
