Two arrested in identity fraud bust

Two women were arrested in an identity fraud bust by Durban Central police last week.

DURBAN Central police busted two women fraudsters for identity theft and fraud.

Head of Communication at the Durban Central Cluster, Captain Kephu Ndlovu said their crime prevention members received a complaint from a business in Smith Street which alerted them to the scam.

“The financial business which grants loans reported that a young woman came to them to apply for a loan of R5000. However, the owner of the business owner realised the salary advice that she had used to apply for the loan was fake,” said Ndlovu.

When the company tried to verify the information from the Human Resources department of the company she allegedly worked for, it was told they had no knowledge of the applicant and said there was no record of her having worked for them. Police were called in to investigate.

“When she was questioned about the salary advice, the 23-year-old woman admitted she had taken it from her friend. “Police members proceeded to the friend who was at Doone House, where they recovered three boxes full of salary advices from different organisations,” said Ndlovu.

Amongst the documents police seized were identity documents and passports as well as salary advice for SAPS, Road and Transport, Department of Education and SARS certificates.

The woman, as well as the owner owner of the Doone House office, a 43-year-old woman were arrested. Ndlovu said both suspects would be linked to other fraud cases and will appear in court in due course.
