Man crushed in Durban harbour freak accident

A WORKER died at the Durban Port in a freak accident after being crushed under a container.

Sipho Mnkane, 47, was found at 3am on Friday morning by a co-worker at the refer yard of the Durban Container Pier 1.

“Operations (were ) immediately suspended. The cause of the incident is unknown at this stage and we can confirm that the SAPS (South African Police Service) have opened an inquest,” said Sibongile Matsena, Corporate Affairs Manager at Transnet Port Terminals.

Matsena said employees on duty at the time of the incident have been receiving counselling, adding that a full investigation has been launched to find out what went wrong.

The United National Transport Union, a workers union for rail transport employees, confirmed Mnkane’s body had been found crushed under a container. The union sent its condolences to the Mnkane family.

Operations at the TPT have since resumed.
