Hurley weekend celebrated

Denis Hurley Centre recently hosted the annual stakeholders meeting and presentation of the Barry Wood award.

EACH year, close to the anniversary of Archbishop Hurley’s death on 13 February, the Denis Hurley Centre celebrates ‘Hurley Weekend’.

This year, the guest preacher at all the Masses at the Cathedral was Rt Rev William Slattery, retired Archbishop of Pretoria. Later, he accompanied the Cardinal and the Archbishop Coadjutor of Durban in laying tributes at the shrine – three Archbishops honouring a fourth.

At the Annual Stakeholders Meeting, the Director, Raymond Perrier, presented a review of the last year using the lens of the Five Books of Moses.

Minister of Health, Hon Zweli Mkhize, spoke very personally of two men who had inspired him, Archbishop Hurley and Paddy Kearney. He commended the Denis Hurley Centre for being a testimony to their legacy, providing help for those who fall between the cracks of government services. He talked of the ‘natural affinity’ between the Denis Hurley Centre and the government of KZN and urged closer collaboration.

His wife, Dr May Mkhize, then presented the annual Barry Wood Awards for outstanding service. The volunteer winner was Reshma Singh who works quietly and diligently almost every day in the kitchen. Staff winners were Nonhlanhla ‘Ma’ Ndlovu (one of the chefs) and Nokuthula Manthsiyo (the senior nurse). Runners up included Sr Cathy (project co-ordinator), Illa Thompson (PR advisor), Paul Radebe (security guard), Presheila Ismail (who teaches meditation) and Calvin Pakkiri (who works in the kitchen through the i-Can project).
