USA awaits Durban dance group

Dance group the Wu Tang Cru are raising funds to perform in New York City this year.

LOCAL authentic American street dance crew, Wu Tang Cru, is appealing for assistance from the community to make its dreams of performing in New York City in July a reality.

The dance group, coached by Jose Africa and Sanusha Govender, who are both three time SA Champs and have KZN Colours in dance, successfully performed at the International ARTS Talent Showcase hosted at Silverstar Casino in September 2019 and were selected by Joey Hunter, International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) talent scout, to take part in IMTA 2020 in the United States of America.

The IMTA is a professional association of the finest and most successful modeling and talent training centers in the world.

Commenting on their performance, Hunter said the group should take great pride in knowing that they are among the very best and have made it through when others have not.

“Dancers at Wu Tang have received accreditation from Dance Sport School League, certificates for Level 1, 2 and 3 as well as in adjudication, represented Durban, KZN at interprovincial tournaments and won best province in the country for three years in row. We have been awarded this once in a life time opportunity which we are extremely excited about. This has got to be one of our greatest achievements thus far,” said Sanusha.

The group will receive media branding and portfolio training, professional photo shoots at Brooklyn Bridge and Times Square, exposure to agents, talent scouts, record labels, and casting directors of the highest calibre from NYC, LA, Asia and Europe and hopes to return to the country rich in expertise, with new approaches to the art, empowered, confident and ready to take on the world.

“We are a proud product of Durban, we acknowledge our communities and values which uphold our nation, inevitably shaping us into the artists we become. This opportunity for our school means everything and more!” she said.

Sanusha said the group would be required to raise around R750 000 to get its dancers to New York City, a price which excludes return flights to New York, meals and Visas.

She said they urgently needed funding or sponsorship to make this dream come true for the dancers. If anyone can help, they are encouraged to contact her on 072 194 9046 or email: sanushag@yahoo.com.
