Join the Friends of Pigeon Valley

The Friends of Pigeon Valley are affiliated to WESSA and are recruiting new members for 2020.

THE community is encouraged to join the Friends of Pigeon valley.

Pigeon Valley is a remarkable urban nature reserve, a gem near the heart of the city. It is home to rare trees, such as the Natal Elm and Forest Loquat, and a remarkable diversity of bird, mammal and insect life. Its cool, shady areas on the northern side provide a welcome contrast at this time of year to the heat of the city.

The Friends of Pigeon Valley are affiliated to WESSA and are recruiting new members for 2020. The Friends undertake a regular monthly walk (on the second Saturday of each month at 7.30am), remove alien vegetation (the reserve now has very little) and work with city officials to enhance security and good management.

At present the reserve has been closed to the public for major upgrading of the waterway that runs through it. The Friends are lobbying for a reopening to ensure that residents of the area do not lose out. The group has secured from the Metro a commitment to refence the area for greater security and more effective management.

Membership is R150, but R30 for scholars and pensioners.
