Stellar international lineup for Time of the Writer fest

The festival will feature at least nine writers from across the world.

FORGIVENESS advocate, Candice Mama is set to headline the upcoming 23rd Time of the Writer International Festival which will be held between 16 and 21 March at a variety of art centres and schools around Durban.

Mama is the author of “Forgiveness Redefined” a book where she discusses how she forgave her father’s murderer, Eugene De Kock. De Kock, an apartheid assasin given the nickname of ‘Prime Evil’ was sentenced to 212 years in prison on 89 counts including six of murder. One of the people De Kock murdered was Glenack Masilo Mama. Mama’s work of forgiveness, reconciliation and trauma has grabbed international audiences.

The festival is hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts and will feature at least nine writers from across the world.

The opening night, where all the writers will be introduced, will take place at Ekhaya Multi-Arts Centre in KwaMashu. Throughout the festival, evening sessions will feature writers on panel discussions at the KZNSA in Glenwood.

TOTW is one of Africa’s longest running literature festivals and has hosted a wide variety of internationally-acclaimed thought leaders such as Zakes Mda and NoViolet Bulawayo, from all over the world, with the main focus on Africa.

Confirmed writers so far include: Fred Khumalo (SA), journalist and award-winning author; Haska Shyyan (Ukraine), writer and poet; Jennifer Makumbi (Uganda), award-winning fiction writer; Keletso Mopai (SA), storyteller and short story author; Cynthia Jele (SA), award-winning novelist; Remy Ngambije (Namibia), short story writer, essayist, columnist and poet; Shafinaaz Hassim (SA), sociologist and author and Siphiwo Mahala, literary critic and story playwright.

There will also be a short story competition for high school writers run in conjunction with the festival, books and cash prizes are up for grabs.
