Schools celebrate top matrics

Schools held prize-giving ceremonies over the past two months to celebrate their top academics, sportsmen and women.

LOCAL schools held prize-giving ceremonies over the past two months to celebrate their top academics, sportsmen and women and cultural awardees.

MARIS Stella’s Speech Day and Grade 12 Prizegiving recently paid tribute to top academic achievers. Dux, Amy Randelhoff, was not only awarded Academic Honours, but also received trophies and book prizes for being the top pupil in English, Afrikaans, maths, AP maths, accountancy, life science, physical science and life orientation.
Proxime Accessit was awarded to Rebecca Standage, who was also awarded Academic Full Colours and trophy for the top pupil in music. The deserving recipient of the Good Fellowship Award went to Kwazikwakhe Ndlovu, while the Complete Maris Stella Girl Award, awarded to the recipient who epitomises the ethos of Maris Stella, went to head girl, Ukhona Ngcongo.

THE Glenwood High School annual senior Speech Day and Prizegiving saw a total of 22 Honours awards for academics presented to top academic achievers.
The guest speaker for the evening was old boy, Steyn Speed, political advisor to the President of South Africa. Dux of school was Nicholas Hardman, with Dux Proxime Accessit awarded to Lindokuhle Shezi. Akhilan Moodley was awarded a prise for finishing third in the grade.
At the school’s annual sports awards, the David Munro Floating Trophy for All Round Senior Sportsman of the Year was awarded to Jordan Brian Hendrikse and Sportsman of the Year title went to Lifa Shinga Ntanzi.

DURBAN Girls’ High honoured its matrics recently, with Nolwazi Khumalo taking the top spot in Grade 12 this year. Dux Proxime Accessit was Morgan Jenkins and third in the grade was Andiswa Gama.

Durban Girls’ College Founders’ Day Awards Ceremony was held recently at the school. Caitlin Honeywell was awarded Proxime Accessit to Dux 2019 and Emma Sharratt was awarded Dux. Amber de Freitas was awarded the Judy Lissaman Cup for Senior Sportswoman of the Year and the Collingwood Family Cup for Netball Player of the Year at the school’s 2019 Sports Awards.

CURRO Embury College announced its top learners at a recent prize giving ceremony. The top three learners were Shaheema Dambha, third in Matric, Nour Mostafa, Dux, and Tyra Allers (headgirl), Proxime Accessit to Dux.

HOLY Family College awarded its top three learners at the annual prizegiving event recently. Dux went to Manelisi Luthuli, followed by Sizo Mthembu and Zamathaba Mathaba.

ST Henry’s Marist College recently held its Annual Sports Awards. Micaela Williams and Tanna Ronné were awarded the High School Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year and Jade Steyn and James Ackerman were awarded the Prep Sportswoman and Sportsman of the year trophies.
Adwoa Usiphile Dansoh and Alwande Asanda Ndwalane were awarded the “The Lisa Bobbert Trophy” for the Best All-round Cultural Performance at the annual St Henry’s Marist College Cultural Awards.

OPEN Air School celebrated its matrics and their achievements at a ceremony recently. Dux of the school as well as the recipient of the main school prize, The Cedric Hilson Honour Prize was Nicole Padayachee.

The Cedric Hilson Honour Prize was founded by Mr Herbert Bishop, assisted by other friends of Mr and Mrs Hilson in memory of their son, who was a pupil at the school from 1940 until his death at the age of 13 in 1945. Although debarred by delicate health from the usual childhood activities, Cedric with great determination and fortitude, led a full and useful life. His mature mind and sense of humour made him a delightful companion to many, while his courage and uncomplaining acceptance of pain were an inspiration to all who knew him.
The memorial prize is awarded annually to the learner at the school whose courageous effort in the face of physical difficulties best matches Cedric’s example.

Sportswoman of the Year was Samkelisiwe Mbatha and Sportsman of the Year was Sabelo Ngema, and Disabled Sportsman of the Year was Lerato Mbhele and Disabled Sportsman of the Year was Scelo Mhlophe.
