Patients at Life Entbeni Hospital receive gift of sight
Patients were given the gift of sight on World Sight Day at Life Entabeni Hospital last month.
A group of resident opthatmologists and anaesthetists at Life Entbeni Hospital, combined their considerable talents and time to give 19 state cataract patients the ultimate gift of sight as part of a campaign to raise awareness for World Sight Day which was celebrated on the second Thursday of October. Not only did they raise awareness but also assited with the cataract backlog in the state sector.
The Eye Centre and Day Theatre staff in conjunction with ophthalmologists Dr Raymond Way, Dr Vanessa Thunstrom, Dr Viresh Dullabh and Dr Matt Young, collaborated with anaesthetists Dr Dave Gwynn, Dr Colin Padoa and Dr Lisa Ryan to provide the surgeries to the patients pro bono.
The valuable programme has been an annual focus for the past few years and would not be possible without the contribution of each member of the team.

Consumables and intraocular lenses required for the surgeries were made available by donations from surgical suppliers and were coordinated by the Right to Sight Trust, a not-for-profit trust of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA).
