UPDATE: Durban tremor not linked to Philippines earthquake

The tremor measured 3.7 magnitudes.

UPDATE: Thursday, 31 October 2019 3.30pm

FOLLOWING the excitement of the Durban tremor on Thursday, 31 October many people started speculating that it was related to earthquake in the Philippines, which killed five people.

However, the Head of Marketing and Communication at the Council for Geoscience, speaking on behalf of the South African Weather Service (SAWS), Mahlatse Mononela, told the Berea Mail’s sister paper, the Highway Mail, that they had linked the source to a location in South Africa.

In fact, Mononela said authorities identified the epicenter of the earth tremors, experienced by many in Durban and surrounding areas, to the R612, a road near Bulwer in KwaZulu-Natal.

Thus far, the cause of the tremor is unknown.

“We cannot at this stage say if there will be another one,” added Mononela.

She confirmed that the tremor measured 3.7 magnitudes.
