Claim your pets, says Durban SPCA

None of the animals taken in to the SPCA on Sunday have been claimed as yet.

IF your pet is missing following the fireworks at the weekend, Durban and Coast SPCA urges you to visit its premises in Springfield Park to claim your animal.

According to Tanya Fleischer, marketing manager at the SPCA, four dogs were taken to its premises on Sunday night.

“Two were injured, and one from Verulam was badly injured and did not make it. We received lots of calls on Monday and Tuesday for collection of stray animals, as well as calls from people reporting their lost animals, however none of the animals taken in to the SPCA on Sunday have been claimed yet,” she said.

Fleischer encouraged the public to visit the SPCA to check for their missing pet, and to also check with local vets and put the message out on community WhatsApp groups.

She said October marks the start of the fireworks season, with Diwali and Guy Fawkes, running all the way through to New Year’s Eve. During this time the SPCA experiences a rise in number of stray animals coming through its doors, and lost reports from worried pet owners start to pour in.

“The Durban and Coast SPCA encourage pet owners to get their animals microchipped. This is the best way to ensure you will be reunited with your pet should they go missing during this busy time. We also have Anxitane for sale, this is a herbal calming medication which is recommended for all pet owners during the fireworks season. It is highly effective and will help keep your pet calm without the harsh effects of a tranquiliser. Older pets should get checked by their vet before giving them any medication,” she said.

How to keep your pets safe during the fireworks season:

Keep them indoors in a familiar room.

Close the windows and curtains.

Have the TV or radio on to muffle the sound.

Stay in the room with them and act normally – our pets react to our emotions, so if you are calm, they will feel calm.

Give them something to do, such as a chewy bone to munch on or catnip toys for cats.

Get a herbal calming medication for your pet – most effective when started a week prior to the expected fireworks – which is available to purchase at your local SPCA or vet.

Have them microchipped.

“Please make the SPCA your first port of call should you find a lost or stray animal or if you have lost your pet. If your pet has gone missing, please ensure to visit your local SPCAs within the seven day time frame,” she said.
