Escaped prisoner arrested in Umbilo

The 27-year-old escaped from Wesville prison on 15 August by using another prisoner's particulars.

AN awaiting trial prisoner, who escaped from Wesville prison in August, is back in police custody.

SAPS provincial commissioner Brig Jay Naicker said the suspect, Ashen Vishnudath (27) escaped from Wesville prison on 15 August by using another prisoner’s particulars.

He was re-arrested by police early Monday morning, 14 October in Umbilo where he was hiding out.

Police charged him with escaping from lawful custody.

Vishnudath was being held in custody for a murder case reported at the Marianhill police station in March this year.

He is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Tuesday, 15 October.

Another suspect (53) who was arrested on Friday, 11 October 2019 at Reservoir Hills for defeating the ends of justice, is appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Two awaiting-trial prisoners, Sudeshan Govender (34) and Tashlin Israel (27) were arrested on 17 August 2019 for aiding the prisoner to escape. They re-appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Brigadier Naicker said at the time a case of  escaping from lawful custody was opened at the Westville police station and the docket was assigned to Provincial Organised Crime Unit for further investigation. “Detectives were on his trail since he escaped from custody until this morning when he was arrested.
