Morningside clean-up tackles illegal dumping

Ward 27 councillor Ernest Smith said there would be a series of clean-ups around ward 27.

LOCAL councillor Ernest Smith is tackling illegal dumping in his ward head-on. On Saturday morning Smith organised a clean-up operation to address the large amount of rubbish illegally dumped in Dulwich Road and Ford Grove, near Percy Osborn Road.

“Having grown tired of requesting the area belonging to the Roads department to be cleaned and chained in the open space running parallel to Percy Osborne Road, a group managed to pack over 250 bags of garbage which goes to show what can happen when you have the buy-in from the community who volunteered their time for a cause,” he said.

Smith thanked everyone who came forward and opted to help clear out rubbish from the area. This included staff from DSW, members of the CPF, volunteers from the Democratic Alliance, councillors and members of parliament of the Central Durban Constituency and most importantly, the public.

“The residents were the true rock stars of the day! A word of appreciation also goes to Joel from iComputing Solutions in Florida Road who donated garden gloves and garden rakes as well as Laura Finch who donated a generous amount of Tuffy Refuse bags towards the cause,” he said.

Smith said there would be a series of clean-ups around ward 27, and encouraged the community to follow the Ward 27 eThekwini page on Facebook to keep informed of when these will happen.

“I look forward to having more residents on board to keep our ward clean!” Smith concluded.
