Slow season start for Quins

Harlequins Cricket Club lost to Topham in its first match of the season.

HARLEQUINS Cricket Club started the official 2019/2020 season with three scheduled matches at the weekend.

The first team took on a strong Topham side in a T20 group match on Sunday. Fast bowler George Badenhorst took two wickets for 19 runs in four overs, and right arm off cut bowler Mohammed Patel was outstanding in his four over spell conceding only 22 runs. Topham’s number four batsman Vishal Thino made 22 runs off 25 deliveries and Bradley Pillay managed 17 undefeated runs, but the Quins bowling attack could not dismiss Topham’s opening batsman, which allowed Topham to set a fine target of 149 runs in 20 overs.

Quins’ batting endeavour was abysmal with Quins’ batsmen missing too many deliveries failing behind the required run rate from the onset of their innings. However opening batsman Sheldon Spindler made 13 runs off 14 balls, George Badenhorst struck 18 runs off 16 deliveries and Kevin Kettle executed some well improvised sweep shots and an explosive six over the clubhouse scoring 22 runs in just a dozen deliveries, remaining undefeated. Quins accumulated 99 runs in 20 overs, losing eight wickets in the process.

The club is aspirant that the team will improve it’s performances as the season advances.

Other team results: Quins’ 2nds vs Rhythm: Quins 2 won on superior run rate; Quins’ 3rds vs Quins’ 4ths: Quins 3 made 148 runs in 30 overs, losing six wickets, Quins 4 were restricted to 124 runs in 30 overs, losing seven wickets.

On Saturday, 5 October, the Saturday team starts its season with a match at Dhubri Road against Merebank 2. On Sunday, Quins’ U13 team starts its league match season with a 30 over game against Phoenix Northcroft. The first team take on Railways in a group T20 match at Crawford College. The second eleven verse Crimson at Harlequins 1, and the fifth team play against Durban Cricket Club at Harlequins 2.

Practice sessions are from 4.30pm Tuesdays to Fridays at the Harlequins cricket nets. Contact 073 795 0363 for further club information.
