The centenarian received a birthday card from HRH Queen Elizabeth.

RESIDENTS at Tuinsig Old Age Home in Durban had 100 reasons to celebrate last week when one of its own, Myrtle Powell turned 100 years old.

The emotional centenarian was surrounded by her family and friends who came together to celebrate the auspicious occasion with her. Myrtle also received a birthday card from Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth on her special day.

“This special event was all about celebrating Myrtle’s 100 years of life with us,” said her son-in-law Peter Linnow.

Myrtle was born and grew up in London. She came to South Africa with her late husband Arthur who came to South Africa while serving as a soldier during World War 2.

Soon after arriving in South Africa, Myrtle discovered she was pregnant with the couple’s first child. The couple decided to stay until the baby was born and then return to England, but ended up staying and making a permanent home in South Africa.

After Arthur sadly passed away, Myrtle moved to Tuinsig in Durban where she met her second husband Don Carstens. They were married for five happy years until his death about a year ago.

When asked for the secret to her long life Myrtle replied is was all about taking things easy, being an active dancer and “an occasional sipper of fine wine and champagne!”
