Students bring Fuguard play to life

UKZN students will perform Nongogo at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre next week.

UKZN Drama and Performance studies students have been cast in the acclaimed production Nongogo, by world-renowned playwright Athol Fugard, which will be staged at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 3 to 5 October at 7pm and 6 October at 3pm.

Durban playwright and actor Philisiwe Twijnstra directs the production, which is an intriguing story of a woman in search of her dreams and herself. Set in a Shebeen in contemporary South Africa, Nongogo/Queeny is a powerful woman who must struggle to succeed in the face of the structural violence of the township. Student Lihle Ngubo, cast as the lead of Nongogo, considers this role as a chance to show her skills on stage but to also bring the character to life.
