Keep to the limit, don’t drink and drive

Law enforcement will be cracking down on motorists who drink and drive.

THERE’S a festive weekend ahead filled with World Cup Rugby, Heritage Day celebrations and school holidays to boot.  Law enforcement agencies will be out in force this weekend and will adopt a hard line on motorists who drink and drive.

The legal driving limit is a breath alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1000ml, or a blood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml.  For consumers who want to work out alcohol units the formula is as follows:  multiply the volume of the drink (in millimetres/mm) by its percentage alcohol by volume (ABV) and divide by 1000, to determine the number of units of alcohol in the drink.

For example: 350ml  Castle Lager beer x 5% ABV divided by 1000 = 1.75 units of alcohol. This means that you should drink one 350ml bottle every two hours to remain within the legal driving limit.

So, if you’re planning on enjoying the weekend festivities to the full, away from the safety and comfort of your home, then nominate a designated driver, catch a cab or uber, but don’t climb behind the wheel of your car and endager your life, the lives of your passengers or other innocent road users.
