Illegal firearms seized

A large number of firearms were seized in the province at the weekend during stabilisation operations.

POLICE confiscated a large number of illegal firearms during stabilisation operations conducted across the province last week.

In on incident in Sydenham, provincial SAPS spokesperson, Lt Col Thulani Zwane, said officers were conducting crime prevention operations in hotspots within their policing precinct in Sydenham, when they received a report of a person in illegal possession of a firearm at a tuck shop in Burnwood.

“It is alleged that the suspect assaulted someone and pointed a firearm at him. The victim reported the matter to the police who reacted swiftly. The suspect attempted to flee as police arrived and opened fire at police officers. He was arrested and was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The firearms had been reported stolen from Phoenix,” he said.
