Shocking mess left by UKZN student litterbugs
The high winds were blowing the filth all over the road and into the neighboring D’MOSS land.
RESIDENTS have expressed their shock and disappointment at the sorry state the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s sports fields were left in following a student event on Saturday, 7 September.
Residents posted images on social media on Sunday, showing the rubbish left strewn over on the property, and complained of the accompanying noise they had to endure during the event.
Their complaints come just months after residents living in proximity to the University had to endure a noisy event held in May which some residents living in Westville could hear.
At the time residents claimed they had not been given pre-warning of the event, hosted by the SRC, which was held midweek and went on until well after midnight.
Resident, Paulo Conde, who captured images of the mess left after the party on Saturday, told Berea Mail that he was saddened to see the state of the varsity grounds after the party, described it as a ‘disgusting state of affairs.’

“While I’m grateful that the party was not in my part of Glenwood this time, I can’t attest to what the residents of Manor Gardens were thinking about the noise. What I can say is that when driving down Rick Turner on Sunday afternoon, the high winds were blowing this filth all over the road and into the neighboring D’MOSS land. There were mounds of broken glass piled up along the road which is used by plenty of people to commute by foot and bicycle, which poses a serious hazard. The mess that spilled out of UKZN caused a problem that the municipality will now no doubt have to deal with,” he said.
He said that as a leading tertiary education provider in South Africa, he was convinced this was not an image the university wanted to portray, the impact it wanted to have on the environment, or the kind of relationship it wanted to have with residents of Glenwood.
Responding to a query by Berea Mail, Ashton Bodrick, executive director of Corporate Relations, said: “The University sincerely regrets the litter left on campus and the surrounding area after the student event held on Saturday, 7 September. Unfortunately, the cleaning services contracted to clean up after the event did not do so despite being provided with confirmation of details on Wednesday, 4 September. A team was sent in on Monday morning, 9 September, to ensure that all litter was recovered and disposed of appropriately. The University extends its apologies to the surrounding community for any inconvenience caused.”
