Taxi hijacked in Glenwood

It is important to be security conscious at all times.

A BLUE Security armed response officer recovered a stolen private taxi following a hijacking in Glenwood on Monday night.

Blue Security’s Andreas Mathios said the taxi driver was dropping off a passenger in Lena Ahrens Road at around 7.40pm when he was held up by a gang of hijackers.

“Three armed suspects pulled up in a gold VW Polo with a GP registration and held up the passenger and the taxi driver at gunpoint, demanding their valuables and ordering them to get out of the vehicle,” he said.

They robbed the student and driver of their cellphones and a wallet and fled the scene in the taxi driver’s vehicle and in their getaway vehicle. No injuries were reported.

“One of our officers later recovered the hijacked vehicle where the suspects had abandoned it in Mazisi Kunene Road,” Mathios said.

In a separate incident in Glenwood at around 6.40pm on Monday night, a gang of four armed robbers held up students in the house they are renting in the suburb.

“Four suspects walked into the house through the kitchen door which had been left open. They held up the students at gunpoint, ordered them to lie down on the floor and robbed them of their cellphones, laptops, a bag of clothes and R850 in cash, before fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported,” Mathios said.

Mathios advised residents to be vigilant and to always keep doors, and at the very least security gates, locked, especially at night.

“Unfortunately, opportunistic criminals will take advantage and target a property if they notice that a door or gate has been left open, while organised criminals also stake out properties before striking. It’s important to be security conscious at all times and not to develop habits like leaving doors and security gates open when you get home,” he said.
