WIN: Poetry book gives Musgrave author wings to fly

The former teacher has had a passion for writing since Grade 4.

MUSGRAVE poet, Aamina Chohan, recently published a book of poetry entitled Flutter.

The former teacher has nurtured a passion for writing since she was in Grade 4, and was encouraged to express herself through writing by her wonderful English teacher.

“I find writing very therapeutic. I’ve enjoyed writing poetry since my school days, and have written many poems over the years which no one read. I decided to put the poetry together in a book for others to enjoy and to get feedback on my writing,” she said.

She published the book of poetry, with 27 poems relating to current issues such as depression, nature, social media and child abuse, in March and has promoted the book in two radio interviews, in Johannesburg and at home in Durban.

She said the book’s title, Flutter, and the image of a butterfly on the cover signified fluttering feeling she attributes to poetry and the fact that this book has given her wings to fly.

Aamina, who holds an Honours in Educational Psychology from UKZN, currently lectures English at Varsity College to degree students and previously taught in both primary and high schools. She has two young children who keep her busy in between lecturing and writing, and she occasionally also write articles for the Al Ummah magazine in Durban and also has her own blog.

“I’m very excited about the book. I want to get it out there to communities, especially into schools and into drama classes as it deals with a variety of topics children can relate to. I am looking forward to writing children’s books in the near future, as there is a need for more South African authors to fill the bookstores. I also have 20 more poems written and plan to publish another poetry book in the future,” she said.

The book is available online as an e-book on Amazon or Kindle at R100. She said schools will get a discounted price if purchasing the book.
