Four firearms seized as operations are bolstered

Communities are once again reminded to immediately contact police if they spot suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods.

FOLLOWING the launch of stabilisations in the province, police officers in eThekwini Clusters have been deployed strategically and placed in hotspot areas to intercept criminals lurking in certain neighbourhoods.

Col Thembeka Mbele, provincial SAPS spokesperson, said communities are once again reminded to immediately contact police if they spot suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods.

“Criminals are targeting certain areas where residents are not as vigilant and not proactive in reporting criminal behaviour to authorities,” she said.

Police officers from Sydenham SAPS were deployed on visible policing operations on 22 August, and spotted a vehicle travelling along Sparks Road with four occupants.

“The vehicle was intercepted on Stanley Copley Drive in Sydenham and the men were searched. During the search, two unlicensed firearms were found in their possession with a total of fourteen rounds of ammunition. The suspects were placed under arrest. They are expected to appear at the Durban Magistrates Court today facing charges for being in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition,” she said.

Mbele said in another operation, police officers from Point SAPS were conducting operations in their police precinct and searches at certain buildings.

During the search, a 50-year-old man was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms and was immediately placed under arrest.

He will appear in court soon.

“All firearms that were seized will be subjected to ballistic tests to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country,” said Mbele.
