Your car’s tyres could render your car insurance worthless

If your car’s tyres are not fit for safe driving an accident insurance claim can be refused!

The main purpose of car insurance is to cover expenses and compensate you should your vehicle be damaged. But are you aware that the condition of your car’s tyres can affect the outcome of your insurance claim should you be involved in an accident?

Insurance policies state that your car needs to be in a roadworthy condition at all times and this includes the condition of the tyres and wheels on your car. All four tyres must be free from cuts, cracks, bulges and any signs of perished rubber. The tread depth, including your car’s spare wheel, must not be less than 1.6mm, and your vehicle’s wheels and rims must be balanced and aligned.

By checking the tyre tread regularly you can detect any potential problems. Never assume that the tyres on your vehicle are roadworthy. Read on to see whether your car’s  tyres will pass insurance company stipulations.

Wrong tyre size

You may want to reconsider plus sizing your car’s tyres or changing the tyre profile. According to Tharik Sheik Ismail from Tyres 2 Go Durban, altering tyres that are not aligned with your manufacturer’s requirements can affect the car’s handling and braking ability.

This could lead to your insurance company reputing your claim, so be aware of what your policy stipulates.

Damaged tyres

Tyres with visible lumps and bulges, hairline cracks and have bald spots are not deemed roadworthy. “Driving with tyres that are smooth is dangerous and can lead to you not being able to avoid an accident,” said Tharik.

You can check the tread of your car’s tyres with a tread depth gauge and ensure you measure both the inside and outside of the tread, or you can  let the pros at Tyres 2 Go give you a full tyre and wheel analysis.

Tharik’s tyre care tip

Check your tyres for uneven wear and tear patterns and if you notice any uneven worn areas or bald spots you need to come in so we can check your tyres balancing and alignment.  Bald spots could also be an indication that your car’s shocks are worn and at Tyres 2 Go we have all the necessary equipment to help with any tyre complications.
