THE increase in theft from, out of and of motor vehicles in the North Beach area was highlighted in a video which went viral on social media last week.

Ramdas mentions the fact that there has been an increase in crimes such as theft of car hub caps and car badges, and shows how people have resorted to chaining their car wheels together to avoid hub caps being stolen or the vehicle being moved. He said police were nowhere to be seen.

In May, Councillor Nicole Graham announced that following a street meeting with residents living in North Beach, the issue of increased crime in the area was raised. She requested Metro Police and SAPS to increase patrols in the area.

In responding to questions regarding the increase in crimes in the North Beach areas, eThekwini police spokesperson Capt Muzi Maphumulo said the beachfront concern of theft of vehicle and theft out of motor vehicle was receiving attention.

“We do have cases of theft of motor vehicles or things stolen from the cars being reported. The police have arrested some suspects and I can confirm that recently a suspect was arrested while found underneath a car attempting to steal a battery,” he said.

Maphumulo said the SAPS and Metro Police were doing patrols around the area.

“Police also have formulated a project team to deal with vehicle theft or theft from motor vehicle. CCTV cameras are available but not working at fully 100 per cent and therefore cannot be relied upon. There are SAPS vans and Metro police vans patrolling the area,” he said.
