Fawzia Peer returns to work, thanks public for their concern

Peer said she was doing well and thanked the public for their concern and well wishes.

ETHEKWINI acting Mayor, Fawzia Peer is back at work after an alleged poisoning scare on Thursday.

The Municipality tweeted on Friday that Peer had returned to chair the meeting of the African Forum for Urban Security which had commissioned research on the status of women’s safety in  various countries.

According to the city’s tweet, in addressing the poisoning incident at the meeting, Peer confirmed she was doing well and thanked the public for their concern and well wishes.

Her return to work follows Thursday’s council meeting’s drama when councillors were warned by Speaker William Lekgoa Mapena that there was paraffin in one of the water bottles handed to councillors and told not to drink the water.

DA caucus leader Nicole Graham tweeted from the council chamber that Peer had suddenly left the meeting covering her mouth.

The Municipality later issued a statement saying the acting Mayor had been to the doctor to get checked out and her water bottle had been sent to the laboratory for testing.

At the time it refuted allegations of poisoning, saying it would wait to hear the results from the laboratory.
