Police warn of remote jamming and online fraud

He said the police were urging the community not to become easy targets of crime.

POLICE are still receiving reports in connection with remote jamming and online advertisements, says Capt SM Maphumulo from Ethekwini Central Cluster SAPS.

He said the police were urging the community not to become easy targets of crime.

“We are still receiving cases of theft from vehicles where laptops, cameras, cellphones or anything of value are stolen from the car without any forced entry. It has been established through investigations by police that the criminals are using jamming devices to commit these crimes. We are appealing to the community to once again do physical checks on their vehicle doors to ensure they are unlocked. Secondly, do not leave the valuables in a car where you can draw the attention of the criminals,” said Maphumulo.

He said the other issue was that people were still buying from newspaper, Facebook or online advertisements.

“Many of the victims, without verifying the item to be purchased, are quick to deposit money. The criminals then disappear, with his or her number only going to voicemail when victims try contact them. Although the police have arrested some of these criminals who commit these crimes, it is continuing. People are urged to be aware,” he said.
