Young Durban marksman hosts golf day fundraiser

Max-Reece van der Merwe hopes to make his mark at the British Junior International for target shooting but needs help to get there.

MAX-REECE van der Merwe will represent South Africa at the British Junior International target shooting competition in August this year.

He was in Grade 6 at Atholl Heights Primary School when Max-Reece, at 11 years of age, signed up as a target shooter for Glenwood High School.

Hard work and determination paid off and he was selected as the first and only pistol shottist for the KZN Bisley team back in 2017.

When he was 12 years old, Max-Reece decided against assisted shooting and moved to shooting free hand for U21s.

Again, his dedication saw him earn a 1st place gold medal at the inter-schools’ competition and he was included in the U21 pistol team. With this group, he represented KZN at the nationals in Newcastle and tied for eighth place.

“Shooting calms me down and keeps me focussed. I am passionate about shooting and my winning recipe is: ‘the more you practice the better you will become,'” he said.

This year, as a Grade 8 learner at Glenwood High School, he snapped up second place at the South African National School Shooters Union (SANSSU) trials and was selected for the 21-member SA team. They will travel to England in August to participate in the British Junior International 2019.

“Such a selection and representation does not come cheap and a fund-raising drive is in motion at present. We are appealing to the community to support our golf day by either sponsoring a hole, prizes, or even better, participate in a four-ball. Alternatively any contribution is appreciated, no matter how small,” said his mom, Sydney.

Tee off for Max-Reece:

THE talented youngster will host a golf day fund-raiser at the Mt Edgecombe Golf Estate on Friday, 28 June from 10.30am.

It is a four-ball alliance format and will cost R2 600 per team. The price includes green fees, golf cart hire, a grab and go lunch as well as dinner and prizes.

Companies can also sponsor a hole for R1 000.

All funds raised from the event will be used to send Max-Reece to represent SANSSU SA at the BJI in England in August this year. To book your team’s spot, contact 081 522 2031 or email: targetshootingfund@gmail.com.
