Memoir matters: Write your own story with Wanda Hennig

We write about ourselves and share our stories not only as a means to remember and record, but to help find meaning in our lives or come to terms with challenges we've encountered.

JOIN long-time journalist Wanda Hennig on two writing workshops next month.

Hennig has worked on newspapers and magazines in South Africa and the San Francisco Bay Area.

She has won awards for food and travel writing and freelanced extensively for print and online publications. She has a post-grad degree in psychology (UKZN) and is a certified co-active coach (California).

She has run mindfulness, writing and coaching workshops in California, South Africa and Europe. She is the author of Cravings: A Zen-inspired memoir.

We write about ourselves and share our stories not only as a means to remember and record, but to help find meaning in our lives or come to terms with challenges we’ve encountered. According to Hennig, the story element of the memoir genre can also have application in business.

“We all have our stories, they’re part of the magic and value of being human,” she says. Hennig is running two workshops where she will help you find and tell your story and connect with yourself.

The first workshop takes place on Monday, 10 June to Thursday 13 June at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo and the second on Wednesday, 19 June and Thursday, 20 June in Glenwood.

In both workshops the focus will be on two linked transformative practices: mindfulness (awareness, presence, “listening”) and memoir writing (story).

During the course of the workshop participants will meet, name and kick-start a relationship with their personal muse; mine the richness of their lives for “story” and start a memoir.

They will also receive tools and a plant how to move forward and take home mindfulness exercises, tools and strategies, and much more.

Class sizes are limited. No writing or mindfulness experience necessary. Just a willingness to jump in and be surprised. A sense of humour and lightness of being will give added value.

For more info on both workshops or to get on a mailing list for future workshops, e-mail wandahennig@gmail.com or WhatsApp Wanda at 072-664-3170. For the Buddhist Retreat Centre e-mail bookings@brcixopo.co.za.
