#IMadeMyMark: Pensioners make their mark

Residents living in old age homes in the area voted on Monday and Tuesday.

PENSIONERS living in old age homes in the area made their mark during special voting days on Monday, 6 and Tuesday, 7 May.

Suzan Daniel, (95), one of the oldest residents at Garden Grove in Musgrave, said she was proud to have voted in the provincial and national elections on Tuesday.

“I believe everyone should have a chance to vote, no matter what their age. It is our special duty to vote. I just hope I put my vote in the right place!” she joked, commenting on her eyesight. Suzan was married in 1965 and has voted ever since she became a South African citizen.

Commenting on how long she has been a voter, Garden Grove resident Jackie Raetzer, (89), said it “seems like forever.”

“I have always voted, for around 70 years now! It is my duty as a citizen of this country to vote. Everyone that can, must vote, we owe it to our country,” she said.

Nancy Norris from Essenwood Residential Home made her mark on a special voting day on Monday.

Ninety-eight-year-old Nancy Norris, who voted at Essenwood Residential Home on Monday, said she has voted ever since she was allowed to make her mark. She said she had grown up in the Orange Free State and started voting then as a young woman.

“The woman who came to the home from the IEC was very sweet and respectful, and it was an easy process. I voted as I would like to see South Africa improve, it is in a mess right now. I have great-grandchildren growing up in the country and there needs to be a change. It has always been my right to vote,” she said, proudly showing off the mark on her left thumb, proof that she had made her mark.
