New beginnings for KZN Blind and Deaf Society after R12m theft

The KZN Blind and Deaf Society has announced restructuring following a review of recent problems, breaches and shortcomings observed in governance and management.

THE management committee of the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society has announced its restructuring following a review of recent problems, breaches and shortcomings observed in governance and management.

This comes after a senior employee allegedly looted the organisation’s bank accounts of R12 million in February this year.

The woman, who had online authority for four of the organisation’s bank accounts, allegedly transferred funds into her personal accounts from 2013.

Since the start of the investigation in January, the financial officer had been dismissed, and other senior administrative workers had been subjected to internal disciplinary hearings.

Denika Pillay, public relations officer for the Society, said the management committee and members of the Society were intent on urgently restructuring and rejuvenating governance and management.

“A provisional team has been appointed to ensure that the Society continues with its services to clients and to give effect to all projects and programmes planned for the year and ensure sound administrative capacity and management capability,” she said.

Pillay said the Society’s gratitude and appreciation was extended to the community.

“The public encouraged and supported the Society during its darkest hours and continues to provide support to the Society. Recognition is given to the donors who stepped in to provide the much needed funds to enable the Society to continue its services and meet its obligation,” she said.
