Exploring Pigeon Valley: The Cape Honeysuckle

The riches of Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve explained by Glenwood resident and chair of the Friends of Pigeon Valley.

This is the 13th article in an ongoing series that highlights the riches of Pigeon Valley, the urban nature reserve in the heart of Glenwood. The focus of this article will be on the Cape Honeysuckle (Tecomaria capensis).

Nature reserves represent a full range of indigenous plants, unlike gardens that have been planted for their floral display. Every now and then though, there is a spectacular show by one of the flowering plants. Tecomaria capensis, the Cape Honeysuckle, is currently setting one corner of Pigeon Valley aflame, attracting a range of nectar-seeking birds and butterflies.

This week I saw Collared Sunbird (like the one in the photo), Grey Sunbird, White-bellied Sunbird and Olive Sunbird feeding there, while a stunning White-barred Emperor butterfly lazed on one flower in the sunlight. The Cape Honeysuckle makes for a most attractive hedge.

People often say that Durban has no seasons, but in reality there are distinct changes not just in weather but in the cycles of plants and animals. In Spring we will have the glorious September Bells, Rothmannia globosa, a tree that is for some reason seldom seen in Durban’s gardens.

Crispin Hemson chairs the Friends of Pigeon Valley, a group that undertakes clearing of alien plants, keeps records of bird and mammal sightings and alerting management to any problems.

The Friends have a monthly walk at 7.30am on the second Saturday of each month. Email: friendsofpigeonvalley1@gmail.com.
