Be aware of scamsters, says SAPS

Berea SAPS offers advice for parents and students.

BEREA SAPS  have warned communities to be aware of oppotunistic crimes that prevail at the start of the year.

Capt Poobalan Naidoo said with schools re-opening, the roads and schools will be congested and this is the ideal time for criminals to look for opportunities while everyone is busy dropping off their children and not really aware off the danger of being robbed.

“We encourage parents to be more vigilant so that everyone stays safe. Be patient, courteous and alert. Do not leave your keys in the ignition when exiting your vehicle to drop off your child and do not leave your boot open exposing your valuables in the boot. Motorists are also urged not to leave laptops and handbags on the passenger seat of their car,” he said.

Naidoo also urged students that are registering at universities to not fall victim to scams, as criminals approach vulnerable students coming into the area for the first time.

“There are no short cuts to being registered at universities so no monies should be given to anyone on the road who promises students access to the university. If they want to register they must go into the university to the cash office to pay the registration fees and obtain a receipt for the amount they paid by the university,” he said.

He said people looking for accommodation in the area must not deposit money into bank accounts without first meeting with the owner or property agent and checking the place out.

“People are vulnerable and desperate and criminals exploit this. Do not view an advertisement in the media and then just deposit the money into the bank account given. You will be scammed. Don’t be scared of losing the place, rather be cautious and check whether it’s legitimate,” said Naidoo.
