Crime awareness at UKZN

Students are fed up with being victims of crime.

THE Medical Students Representative Council Crime Awareness Campaign will be held next week at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical School.

According to Umbilo CPF chairman, Ben Madokwe, this comes after an increase in crime in the community which has also affected students attending the medical school.

The awareness day will be on Friday 30 August at UKZN Medical School, L7 from 4pm to 7pm.

“This programme is aimed at making our community aware of the rising level of crime in our community. This has obviously endangered the lives of our students. Our students are mugged on a daily basis and their belongings taken. The Medical Students Representative Council (MSRC), in partnership with the Umbilo CPF has identified the crisis and decided to take a stand and fight this evil through involvement with our community authorities,” said Madokwe.

According to Ntuthuko Mdlalose, MSRC deputy president, the first step is to alert the authorities and members of the community of this problem.

“Our offices are flooded on a daily basis by devastated students who have lost items ranging from cell phones to cars. This programme aims to invite the authorities, university management and other stakeholders to engage on the issue of crime in our community and try to find possible ways of dealing and ultimately eradicating it,” said Mdlalose.

The programme will include guest speakers such as a representative from the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, Umbilo CPF, SAPS, Metro Police, RMS and the MSRC.

There will also be a poster completion where students can design a poster on crime awareness. The winning poster will be placed around Umbilo and residences and the winning student will receive a gift voucher from a Durban mall as a prize.

Supper will be served.
