Irish ambassador visits Denis Hurley Centre

The Irish Ambassador recently spent a day at the centre so that he could see the results of an investment made.

THE Irish Embassy in SA has been a solid supporter of the Denis Hurley Centre which was named after Denis Eugene Hurley, whose parents came from Skibbereen, County Cork in Ireland.

The late Archbishop was just one of the many people of Irish origin who have made a major contribution to South Africa over the centuries. Irish Aid – one of the most generous government development programmes in the world – made a major donation to help build the centre. It also helped fund medicines for the clinic while negotiations for support from the Department of Health were underway and provided a major grant to help reconfigure the centre’s café to create a proper working kitchen.

The Irish Ambassador, Liam MacGabhann, recently spent a day at the centre to view the fruits of thisinvestment and catch up on the many developments since his last visit three years ago. Since disability is a key focus for Irish Aid, he was pleased to meet the centre’s deaf students and be taken on a tour around by the centre’s blind tour guide.

The centre encourages visitors to experience the same tour and to sample the drinks, muffins and snacks that its Face2Face students sell in the café.
