Marching against abuse

"We need to speak out against abuse every day of the year."

ETHEKWINI Outreach, Kenilworth Respite Centre, Mayville SAPS Community Policing Forum, Refocus and Upliftment Programme (RAUF) and residents took to the streets of Overport on Saturday in an awareness march for the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse.

Speaking to Berea Mail at the event, Sabera Timol from the respite centre said the event was being held to send a message to women to stand together in the fight against gender based violence.

“Brave men are also together with us in this fight and I want to say to abused women, don’t stay in an abusive situation. Get proper support and counselling and through this you can regain self-worth. It is important to come out and seek help, we need to speak out against abuse,” she said.

Nasrin Kadwa, chair of eThekwini Outreach, said the event was a global awareness message to say that enough is enough.

“Women and children matter and united we can make a difference. We have support from the police who are on board and are taking responsibility for policing domestic violence cases,” she said.

Chair of eThekwini Secure, Mayville CPF chair and eThekwini Cluster CPF chair, Imtiaz Syed, said the project was important in the community and was encouraging active citizenship.

“We need to speak out against abuse every day of the year,” he said.
