UPDATE: Police officer dies in hospital following Durban court shooting

Justice officials are trying to establish how an off-duty policeman was allowed inside the court with a weapon.

THE police officer who shot and killed his ex-wife and her brother at the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday, died last night.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed that the husband and wife were at the court for divorce proceedings when he opened fire, fatally wounding his wife and his brother-in-law before shooting himself in the neck.

The off-duty policeman from KwaMashu Police Station, allegedly shot the victims multiple times before turning the gun on himself in O Court.

“He was then rushed to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries,” said Mbele.

The magistrates court was on lock-down following the incident which happened at around 11.30am.

Justice officials are trying to establish how an off-duty policeman was allowed inside the court with a weapon. An inquest and two counts of murder were opened at Durban Central police station for investigation.
