Weekend events in honour of Archbishop Denis Hurley

THE 103rd anniversary of the birth of Archbishop Denis Hurley who was born on 9 November 1915, will be marked by a number of events in different locations in Durban. On Friday there will be a book launch at St Joseph’s Florida Road 5.30pm.
The book from Cluster Publications: ‘A Life in Letters is a collection of letters selected by Paddy Kearney (his biographer and the Chair of the Denis Hurley Centre), Fr Philippe Denis and Jane Argall.
On Saturday morning, the annual lecture which has been hosted by the Justice and Peace Group of the Archdiocese of Durban for more than 20 years, takes place at the Holy Trinity Church, Musgrave Road at 9.30am.

This year the lecturer is Fr Peter-John Pearson, founding director of the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office and Vicar-General of the Archdiocese of Cape Town. Peter-John is a world-renowned campaigner and speaker on social justice who knew Hurley personally. His subject will be Racism and Racial Division.
On Sunday a special sung mass takes place at the Mass at Emmanuel Cathedral from 10am, by John Tungay presenting a choir of ‘Pueri Cantores’, boys and girls from the villages around Cedara Theological Institute. They will be singing Margaret Rizza’s Mass of St Benedict’ within the regular Sunday morning Cathedral Mass. This is, in part, a tribute to Archbishop Hurley, whom John knew well, and also to mark the Centenary of the exact end of the First World War.
