Death penalty for hardened criminals, says reader

A merciful end should be put to the lives of monsters who commit vicious premeditated murder, rape, and other violent abuses.

EDITOR – A merciful end should be put to the lives of monsters who commit vicious premeditated and/or deliberate murder, rape, and other violent abuses; then the law will not be regarded as being as brutal as the crimes perpetrated.

When the guilty person is captured he or she should have the right to explain him or herself rather than the right to remain silent. They should be tested and treated for mental illness and for other disorders such as Marfan Syndrome or Multiple Personality, or chromosomal disorders such as multiple Xs or Ys, as the presence of these conditions may have coloured the person’s thinking and outlook on life. Medical and psychiatric staff and students should be allowed to study them.

If the suspected perpetrator has an interesting life story it can be recorded and used to teach people and sometimes to raise money for their victims, which may include their own families. Then, once their guilt has been established beyond doubt they should be prepared by spiritual or other advisors to take their leave of any loved ones and the rest of this world.

This should deter other sensible people from copying their behaviour, but even if it doesn’t, it will ensure that that person doesn’t reoffend or become a burden on the taxpayers, whose money should rather be used for better purposes.

The worst example of a monster that I can think of in the world today is the Norwegian Anders Breivik, whose continued existence makes me less enthusiastic to even visit the land of my forebears.
