DA concerned over violent protests

Wards surrounding the city centre have been most heavily affected with wards 25, 30, 23, 31 and 101 having the most number of protests.

THE frequent and often violent protests in Durban have been condemned by the Democratic Alliance who says that despite the protests, councillors will strive to prioritise service delicery in what has become an increasingly hostile environment.

MP, Central Durban, Haniff Hoosen said the party was concerned by the frequency of the protests which had affected wards 25, 30, 23, 31 and 101 adversely.

On Monday 10 September a private residence was set alight in a protest about housing at the Jadhu Place informal settlement. This follows another incident a year ago where a private residence was also torched.

In recent months, a number of municipal vehicles have been destroyed by fire in violent protests which have further hampered service delivery in the area.

According to ward 31 councillor, Chris Pappas, the underlying cause of the protests is the growing frustration of desperate citizens against the failed promises of the ANC under the leadership of Mayor Zandile Gumede.

“The mayor has further fueled the community’s unhappiness by deliberately excluding the biggest shack dwellers organisation in the city, Abahlali Basemjondolo, when signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with four shack dwellers associations at City Hall, ” he said.
