Curtain call for ad hoc orchestra

The British Cultural and Heritage Association (BCHA) is hosting its annual ‘Massed Orchestra’ event on 21 October.

THE British Cultural and Heritage Association (BCHA) is calling for aspirant orchestral musicians in the Durban area to register if they would like to participate in the annual ‘Massed Orchestra,’ sponsored by Corobrik, event on Sunday, 21 October at Penzance School.

This year’s massed ad hoc orchestra of prospective players will perform under the seasoned baton of conductor Sue Cock.

The main concert opens with the South African National Anthem. Eclectic titles to be heard on the bumper programme of concert favourites include Strauss’s Radetsky March, Anderson’s Syncopated Clock, Coates’s Sleepy Lagoon, Fuík’s Entry of the Gladiators, an Abba medley, Mango Groove’s Special Star, an arrangement of the traditional song, Siyahamba, Over the Rainbow, Offenbach’s Can-Can, John Philip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever, and John William’s Star Wars Main Theme.

All participants must be able to read and play music. Participants are encouraged to register well in advance of the event and they must be as conversant as possible with the prescribed music. They are required to pay an entry fee of R60 and to register to play either as individuals or as part of a group.
