Department of Energy confirms small petrol increase for August

The cost of petrol will once again increase at midnight tonight.

DESPITE national protests against record-high petrol prices, commuters will see little reprieve in the fuel costs next month.

On Monday, the Department of Energy confirmed the petrol prices would increase by one cent on Wednesday, 1 August. This will take a litre of 95 from R16.02 to R16.03.

However, diesel would decrease by four cents.

“The average international product prices of petrol and diesel and illuminating paraffin decreased during the period under review,” the department said in the statement.

It added that the cost of petrol was also affected by the Rand that has depreciated against the dollar between 29 June and 26 July.

“This led to a higher contribution to the basic fuel prices on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 10.23c/l, 10.44c/l and 10.62 c/l respectively.”
